Accountancy Age’s annual 50+50 survey asked firms about diversity. The results show that there has been very little increase in diversity compared to a year ago, but that firms are taking actions to improve their diversity in the future. The accounting industry remains male-dominated at the top: 87.4% of leaders in firms are male. UK qualified accountants are more balanced, however, being 44.3% female. As for ethnic diversity, 59% of firms have no UK Partners – and 28% have no UK qualified accountants – from BAME backgrounds. Still, nearly all firms (94.6%) have diversity and/or equality policies.
Key Takeaways:
- There is still a gender gap between men and women in the accounting field in the United Kingdom and there is still slightly more men than women.
- The pay gap between men and women does seem to be closing slowly.
- There is still a very small number of ethnic minorities in these kinds of firms.
“Despite overall diversity remaining relatively low, the good news is that firms are embracing new strategies to tackle the diversity gap, aiming at improving their figures in the upcoming years.”
